Background of the Study

Effective communication between nurses and psychiatric patients is a crucial component of mental health recovery. Communication influences patients’ trust, medication adherence, therapeutic engagement, and overall well-being (WHO, 2024). Psychiatric patients often experience emotional distress, cognitive impairments, and communication difficulties, making nurse-patient interactions essential for fostering a supportive healing environment (Ogunbiyi & Adeyemi, 2023).

In psychiatric hospitals such as the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, nurses play a significant role in patient care, providing medication, psychological support, and crisis intervention. However, the quality of nurse-patient communication varies due to factors such as training, workload, and institutional policies (Olawale et al., 2024). Poor communication can lead to misunderstandings, non-compliance with treatment, and prolonged hospital stays, while effective communication promotes recovery and enhances patient satisfaction.

Despite its importance, research on nurse-patient communication in Nigerian psychiatric settings remains limited. This study aims to investigate the role of communication in psychiatric patients’ recovery, assessing how nurses’ verbal and non-verbal interactions influence treatment outcomes at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba.

Statement of the Problem

Although psychiatric care in Nigeria has improved over the years, gaps remain in nurse-patient communication, affecting treatment efficacy (Ibrahim et al., 2023). Many psychiatric patients experience difficulties expressing their emotions and needs, and without proper communication, nurses may struggle to provide adequate care. Factors such as understaffing, heavy workloads, and limited training in therapeutic communication further hinder nurse-patient interactions (Adebayo & Eze, 2024).

Additionally, there is a lack of empirical data on how different communication strategies impact psychiatric patients' recovery rates. Without a clear understanding of effective communication techniques, nurses may continue to rely on generic communication approaches that fail to address the specific needs of psychiatric patients. This study seeks to bridge this gap by exploring the influence of nurse-patient communication on recovery outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the impact of nurse-patient communication on psychiatric patients’ recovery at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba.
  2. To identify barriers to effective nurse-patient communication in psychiatric care.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of different communication strategies used by nurses in psychiatric settings.

Research Questions

  1. How does nurse-patient communication influence psychiatric patients’ recovery?
  2. What are the major barriers to effective communication between nurses and psychiatric patients?
  3. What communication strategies are most effective in promoting psychiatric patients’ recovery?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant relationship between nurse-patient communication and psychiatric patients’ recovery.
  2. Communication barriers do not significantly affect the treatment outcomes of psychiatric patients.
  3. Different communication strategies do not have varying effects on psychiatric patients’ recovery rates.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on psychiatric patients receiving care at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos. The study will assess nurse-patient communication strategies and their impact on recovery. Limitations include potential response bias from patients, variability in nurses' communication styles, and the challenge of controlling external factors affecting recovery.
